Great article about Inquiry. Not just the normal textbook stuff. In fact the article makes the point to stress that the textbook should be used for reference only.

Summary: Major points in the article.

v Inquiry is the opposite of the old fashioned transmission teaching. (lecture by teacher with textbook and worksheets)
v Education today creating workers for our society not learners.
v Inquiry learning is about habits of the mind. (disciplined questioning and investigation)
v List of teacher behaviors to help show what Inquiry is and a good list of what Inquiry is NOT.

Reflection: Why I liked the article.

This article succinctly describes what Inquiry is and how to go about incorporating it into your curriculum. It is simply written, with a simple list of commonalities of inquiry which can be applied to all subjects. I particularly liked the following exerpts as they highlighted some helpful perspectives. I am keeping a copy to guide me in my future endeavors.

  • "Inquiry based teaching transforms the aims of the school from short-term memorization of facts to disciplined questioning and investigating."
  • "hands on teaching is not synonymous with inquiry-based teaching."
  • "Having questions that guide inquiry is key, with BIG IDEAS (critical knowledge about the topic)"
